The Local Area Networks course aims at familiarizing students with fundamental concepts in a local area network and how one can take advantage of a network's facilities. The most important course objectives are: (1) structuring the basic information on how computer networks work, and familiarizing students with interfaces, and general concepts related to the use and interraction with a computer network, (2) introducing the main concepts related to computer networks: OSI protocol stack, transmission media, Ethernet, switching, IP addressing, applications (3) establishing the current context of evolution for computer networks and aknowledging computer netwoks high degree of relevance nowadays.
